What is the Slab-Building Method?Updated 20 hours ago

Slab Building is a hand-building technique in pottery where flat pieces of called slabs are rolled out and then cut and assembled to create three dimensional forms.

There are a few stages to slab building:

  • Clay is rolled into even sheets(you can use a rolling pin or a smooth glass wine bottle for this), then cut into shapes using templates or freehand.
  • The flat slabs are joined together into three dimensional shapes by scoring and slipping (scratching the surfaces and applying clay slurry) to form boxes, cylinders, or more complex shapes.

Slab building is ideal for making geometric or architectural forms like trays, planters, vases, or even modern style sculpture.

Using slab building techniques you can achieve clean lines, flat surfaces, and is great for beginners and experienced potters alike.
